TECHNICAL DATA IN THIS GUIDE IS BASED ON 2015 VW GTI
STAGE 1
Required hardware upgrades:
Please remove the factory snow screen as well as trim the air duct to allow increased air flow. This gives much more air to the engine, and we have seen power up to 450-470PS using the stock intake with this modification. If you have an aftermarket intake installed, you can ignore this step. However, we do recommend using the Factory airbox with this modification instead of an aftermarket intake system.
1-step colder plugs for IS20-IS38 equipped cars:
Recommended Spark Plug Upgrade | Model | Notes |
---|
Denso | 5749 | pre-gapped (slant tip) |
Brisk | ER12S | Gap to 0.024" |
NGK | 4905 R7438-8 | Pre-gapped (slant tip) |
OEM (NGK) | 06K 905 601M "RS7 plugs" | Gap to 0.024" |
For all slant tip spark plugs check the gap to ensure it is not overly above spec but in most cases, they are 0.024-0.028 out of the box. These do not follow the same gap procedure as a standard spark plug and should be left alone.
It is recommended to check the spark plug gap after 5000 KM (3100 Miles) as well as the TQ, and to change them after 10,000 KM (6500 Miles) for optimal performance and safety.
STAGE 2
Required hardware upgrades:
Hardware upgrades as tested:
Supported Fuel for Stage 1 and 2
Octane/Ethanol | Supported Ready files |
---|
91 Octane | Yes |
93 Octane | Yes |
STAGE 3
Stage 3 Tunes are available on InstaTune as Off-The-Shelf base map files. In most cases, these files will work as intended, but due to variations in local fuel, hardware discrepancies, and vehicle condition, data logging may be required to ensure the tune is working as intended. If you do not have access to the required fuel specified on InstaTune, you may request a tune revision for your local available fuel. This may also require data logging to ensure correct adjustments are made to your tune.
Data logging is recommended (and in some cases may be required) to ensure customer satisfaction and engine longevity. Our goal is to provide you with the best tuning solution for your hardware setup.
Required hardware upgrades:
Supported Fuel for Stage 3
Octane/Ethanol | Supported Ready files |

91 Octane | By request (Tickets) |
93 Octane | Yes |
Ethanol/ Flex Fuel | In Development |
FLEX FUEL REQUIREMENTS
For Flex Fuel users, on any stage, the following upgrades are required:
Ethanol Sensor
High Pressure Fuel Pump Piston Upgrade
Instatune files were developed with VIS Motorsport piston upgrade (11.67mm Piston) - Other options with the same piston size will work.
DSG Tune is Required for Flex Fuel files due to the extremely high torque that this tune provides for unparralleled performance and trap speeds.

*NOTE* Hardware upgrades outside of this list will require Calibrator confirmation that a tune can be produced and may incur a Custom Tune charge. Do not use Stage 3 tunes without confirming compatibility with Calibrator.
* Rear O2 sensor delete is not available for later 1.8T and 2.0T TFSI and TSI with SIMOS engine control units (as opposed to Bosch MED9 and MED17) with exhaust manifold built into their heads. It's because they depend more heavily on the rear O2 sensor to ensure a more accurate AFR. This is consistent with our desire to maintain OEM-level reliability and smooth drivability, especially at high performance.
